Adkins was born to a young single mother living in various working-class areas of London. She was an avid singer of popular music of the present as a child and was able to play the clarinet and guitar. It wasn't until her teens when she was introduced to Etta James, a rhythm-and-blues performer, as well as other artists from the 20th century's mid-century, and she began to consider about a career in the field of music. While she was honed in her skills at a government-funded secondary school for the performing arts one of her friends began posting songs Adkins wrote and recorded on the social networking site Myspace. Following her graduation the music of Adkins caught the attention of record label. She got a contract in the year 2006 with XL Recordings.
